'Today is Good Friday. There is no news.'

Once in the 1930s the BBC news programme on the wireless broadcast this announcement. 'Today is Good Friday. There is no news.'

For some reason, this reminds me of C.R. Attlee being asked at the end of an interview by the BBC in the 1951 general election campaign if he had anything else he wanted to say to the British public, to which the Prime Minister replied, 'No.'

My mother said when she was a little girl grown-ups told her there would be not be any news after the War was over and she felt very deceived when she found that there was.
