'Arab Spring has washed the region's appalling racism out of the news'

The Independent's headline on a story by Robert Fisk:

Robert Fisk: Arab Spring has washed the region's appalling racism out of the news
The Long View: Migrant workers from the subcontinent often live eight to a room in slums – even in oil-rich Kuwait

Is this really so appalling? It is exactly what I would have expected.

Do people expect every country to have race relations laws and Western ideas of treating servants? Is it reasonable to judge these countries by the standards we use here when they are so different from us?

And presumably these migrant workers move to the Middle East because conditions are better there than in the countries they left.
