Backpackers are the (almost, lets not go too far) acceptable face of tourism. Backpackers are good people.

They are interested in the places they are visiting, they do not spoil things too much, they do not lead developers to invest in large hotels or marinas. They talk to local people. They sometimes fall in love. They represent hope. They are human scale and spending little they are not big business.

Kings live in palaces.
Pigs live in sties.
Youth lives in expectation.
Youth is wise.

(As Ruth Dudley Edwards said to me, Belloc never lets one down.)
