In her grandmother's village

A picture taken by my friend Mihaela Mihăilă in her grandmother's village last September.

She spends her weekends there and I envy her. The countryside is the profound Romania. The cities are scarcely Romania at all yet I stay in city pent almost all the time, enjoying the comfort of my burrow, like a character like Ratty or Bilbo Baggins from a children's story. Time to throw away a life lived through literature and throw away Edwardian nostalgia and and move and live. Although the Romanian countryside I have to say is pretty Edwardian too which is its great charm and probably why I live here.

Once a burrow meant where ones books were but nowadays a laptop is a mobile burrow.
