Rubens: The Triumph Of The Church Over Fury, Discord and Hate

This is my favourite tapestry, seen in Madrid in 1985, showing the chariot of the Church running over heretics, Jews and infidels. My Jewish friend who was with me was slightly sniffy about my buying the poster of it then - now it would be deeply anti-zeitgeist.

I was always in love with the more reactionary aspects of Catholicism without having the faintest suspicion that the religion of my childhood was true. But so I discovered it to be and then which parts of the Faith are reactionary or not was no longer important. Though I admit I still find the reactionary side enjoyable.

If only Catholicism in our age bore any faint resemblance to the obscurantist autocracy anti-Catholics imagine.
