Two Worlds Cracking Up

An interesting article in the New York Times by Thomas Friedman seeks to explain the collapse of the Euro and the collapse of several Arab regimes thought the two are not obviously or necessarily connected.

Europe cannot be democratic because Europe has no demos. There is no demos in Syria or Libya either. In Egypt and Tunisia there is some sense of nationhood or a political community but I am not sure this will save those countries.

I hope there will still be a demos in England in a hundred years' time.
