Freedom is absolutely necessary for progress in science and the liberal arts

Freedom is absolutely necessary for progress in science and the liberal arts.  - Baruch Spinoza.

I wonder if this is true. It might explain why the Muslim world produced so little in science or arts. Possibly, probably, although in the Middle Ages Muslims did better than Europeans at medicine and architecture.

But how does Louis XIV'S France fit in or nineteenth century Russia which did very well in the arts? The answer is that they refute the thesis.

Life it seems is a History general paper - history graduates should be required to sit them at the age of fifty. In this way many curious insights and even facts could be added to the common store - perhaps more than is added by Ph.D. theses.

  1. Spinoza suffered at the hand of his fellow ethnocentric and bigoted Jews. He was right in that respect.
