'"Do you believe," said Candide, "that men have always massacred each other as they do to-day, that they have always been liars, cheats, traitors, ingrates, brigands, idiots, thieves, scoundrels, gluttons, drunkards, misers, envious, ambitious, bloody-minded, calumniators, debauchees, fanatics, hypocrites, and fools?

"Do you believe," said Martin, "that hawks have always eaten pigeons when they have found them?"'

Voltaire, 'Candide'

“He was one of the numerous and varied legion of dullards, of half-animated abortions, conceited, half-educated coxcombs, who attach themselves to the idea most in fashion only to vulgarize it and who caricature every cause they serve, however sincerely.”

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment

“I am an excitable person who only understands life lyrically, musically, in whom feelings are much stronger as reason. I am so thirsty for the marvelous that only the marvelous has power over me. Anything I can not transform into something marvelous, I let go. Reality doesn't impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls.”

Anaïs Nin

    1. I had in mind the ideology of statism, equal opportunities, feminism, anti-racism et al. Not to forget climate change and enthusiasm for the European Union. In J.S. Mill's famous phrase, the Tories were 'the stupid party'. And as A.J.P. Taylor said, this seeming insult was not an insult at all: 'To be stupid and to be sensible are not far apart. The progressive party, Radical and Socialist, is clever, but silly.' Russell was on the side of the progressives though too wise to be a socialist. In our day the Tories are now also progressives but have some common sense.

    2. I imagine you prefer Mr. Erdogan to Mr. Putin but I wonder what you think of this. "For nearly five years, it has been an open secret that Turkey serves as Islamic State’s logistical base. Almost all the foreigners traveling to Syria to join IS transit through Turkey.
For nearly two years, we have known that Turkey is Islamic State’s major arms supplier. And for six months we have known that they are their partners in oil exports."
