Archbishop Scicluna: homosexuality does not predispose one to sin

SHARE
Sandro Magister, an Italian journalist who writes for the magazine L'espresso, asked at the Vatican Sexual Abuse Summit press conference yesterday why "homosexuality" was missing from the summit discussions.

Archbishop Scicluna replied that homosexuality, like heterosexuality, is a human condition "that does not predispose one to sin".

I thought, hearing his whole answer, that by sin he meant homosexuality does not predispose one to abuse children, but his slip of the tongue, if that is what it was, is very revealing.

But  Archbishop Scicluna has said this more than once at this Vatican conference, and none of his colleagues have tried to interrupt or contradict him. So it cannot be a slip of the tongue and maybe he means exactly what he says, which makes no sense.

The Catholic Church teaches that the sin of Sodom is one of the four sins crying out to heaven for vengeance, whether involving a child or adults. Some hope, it now seems, that this teaching may be gently left aside, like the former condemnation of the sin of usury.

Archbishop Scicluna thinks that homosexual activity in seminaries (some of which is coercive and involves misuse of power)

“has nothing to do with the sexual abuse of minors.”

Archbishop Scicluna’s remarks are part of an attempt by the Vatican to avoid the issue of homosexuality.

In so doing, the conference is failing to address one important aspect of the majority of the sex crimes, where the victims are boys who have reached puberty.

This is an appalling cover-up by the Church that has been shown to have covered up so very much.

The question then arises: why exactly is the Church doing this?

The answer?

I really do not know.

Is it because for modern liberal priests "discriminating on the grounds of sexuality" is a bigger sin than sodomy?

That cannot be. But what the reason is I do not know.

  1. This is not a tough question. One answer is that in the US now, and no doubt in other places, more than half of young priests are homosexuals, and the best the church can do is to urge them not to be too promiscuous or to join “gay” parades dressed in fetishist outfits.

  2. YOU HEARD IT RIGHT! THIS IS WHAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ACTUALLY BELIEVES AND TEACHES HENCE, A PRIEST MAY BE A HOMOSEXUAL AS LONG AS HE IS CHASTE. THEY SAY HOMOSEXUALITY IS AN OBJECTIVE DISORDER BUT SUBJECTIVELY IT MAY BE FINE. THAT IS WHY I STOPPED TAKING COMMUNION IN CHURCHES WHERE THE BISHOP IS UNDER THE POPE. BY ANALOGY OF REASONING I FIGURED OF THERE IS A DEFECT IN MATTER, WHEN GRAPE JUICE IS USED INSTEAD OF WINE, THERE IS ALSO A SIMILAR DEFECT WHEN THE PRIEST IS NOT FULLY A MAN. HIS ROLE, WHEN HE SPEAKS "HOC EST ENIM…" IS TO SYMBOLISE CHRIST JUST AS THE BREAD AND WINE DO. SINCE THE CREED SAYS CHRIST IS TRUE GOD AND TRUE MAN, THEN THE PRIEST SHOULD BE TRULY A MAN. A TRUE MAN DOES NOT HAVE FANTASIES ABOUT BEING PENETRATED BY ANOTHER MAN OR SIMULATING INGESTION OF THE MALE MEMBER. THIS DISQUALIFIES HIM IN MY MIND FROM THE PRIESTHOOD. SINCE IT IS EVIDENT THAT THE POPE ET AL. DOES NOT HAVE MY SPIRITUAL INTERESTS AT HEART I CAN ONLY FOLLOW MY OWN CONSCIENCE. THE LATTER TELLS ME THAT HOMOSEXUALS ARE NOT FULLY MEN. WHY THIS IS SO I DO NOT KNOW. BUT MASSES OFFERED BY SUCH MEN ARE IN MY VIEW INVALID, NOT BECAUSE OF THE PERSONAL SIN OF THE PRIEST. RATHER, IT IS BECAUSE THE CHURCH HAS NOT WORKED OUT ITS UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT A MAN (VIR) IS. NATURE IS BINARY CODED. BUT THE CHURCH DOES NOT FOLLOW NATURE. IT SAYS THERE CAN BE AN INDIVIDUAL WHO IS NEITHER MALE NOR FEMALE. PEOPLE OF UNDETERMINED GENDER ARE BARRED FROM THE PRIESTHOOD. BUT THE CHURCH TEACHES THAT'S ONLY WHEN THE GENDER IS UNDETERMINED PHYSICALLY. I FIND THIS UNACCEPTABLE. AND GIVEN THAT THERE ARE APOSTOLIC CHURCHES,WHICH ADMINISTER VALID SACRAMENTS AND WHO DO NOT TEACH THIS, THERE IS NO REASON TO REMAIN IN COMMUNION WITH A CHURCH WITH INVALID SACRAMENTS, LICIT THOUGH THEY BE. ALSO THE CHURCH TEACHES THAT PROTESTANTS CAN RECEIVE COMMUNION IN SPECIFIED CIRCUMSTANCES. BOTH POPE JOHN PAUL II AND BENEDICT XVI GAVE COMMUNION TO PROTESTANTS BECAUSE, IT IS ARGUED THAT THEIR SPIRITUAL LIFE BEGAN WITH BAPTISM. HENCE THEY ARE MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH. THAT IN FACT WAS MY FIRST WARNING THAT SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH PAPAL TEACHINGS. THEN THE GAY ISSUE CAME TO MY ATTENTION.

  3. I think it is fornication that is the problem, that is all sex outside marriage. So up until recently homosexual sex was impossible inside marriage and thus, unavoidably de facto fornication, but no worse than heterosexual activity outside marriage?

Is it because modern liberal priests are actually atheists? Is it because modern liberal priests actually want to destroy the Church?

  5. A friend commented: It was brought to my attention by a very gay friend of mine that a great many practicing gays also dislike sodomy but restrict their life to purely oral sex and I think this may be the reason for unspoken acceptance of gay men in the priesthood and in the congregation. If they keep it to that then no sin is committed perhaps? Also the pressure of human / liberal rights is a tidal wave of change, a religion in itself so they may feel it is either adapt or be washed away. The very handling of child abuse in the church is indicative of the forgiveness of anything offered up in the confessional; every ill-conceived thought or act CAN be forgiven if forgiveness is sought and that should suffice. I hasten to add that I don’t necessarily subscribe to this but try to defend the seemingly backward handling by the authority within the Catholic Church with this answer ...that it is one of the essential tenets of the religion to forgive anything as only God has the ultimate decision not man and the priest is in his place (is an oversimplification but how it may be explained to non-Catholics).
