Hijabs and persecution

Headline from a story in the New Zealand news magazine Stuff which took off the net the story of dangerous terrorists attending the Christchurch mosque in 2015:

Hijab wearing police officer's photo makes powerful statement in wake of Christchurch mosque shootings

A Swedish friend posts on Facebook a new story about a hijab wearing newscastress in Sweden.

Both of these things are unobjectionable in themselves, but the tendency is clear. The Western world is changing. Christianity is less and less its default setting. Islam is more and more part of the West.

Here is a story about how Christians are persecuted much more than Muslims, but no-one suggests legislating against Christophobia.

Christians are persecuted much more than Muslims all over the world, especially in the Middle East but also in France.

One of the most famous churches in Paris, Saint Sulpice, was set on fire shortly after 12 o'clock Mass last Sunday, March 17th. I think the man arrested, who is white, may have mental problems. It was one of a dozen French churches attacked over a period of only a week. In 2018, the French Ministry of the Interior recorded 541 anti-Semitic acts, 100 anti-Muslim acts, and 1063 anti-Christian acts.

I honestly don't have a problem with Muslim women wearing the hijab. I very much dislike the idea of banning the expression of religious beliefs. Any kind of legislation aimed at doing such a thing will be used against Christians.

It saddens me to see "conservatives" in favour of religious persecution. The fact that Christians face persecution is surely all the more reason to oppose any restrictions on the expression of religious faith.

    1. I don't want to ban these scarves or veils or even full burqas. Did you think I did?

No, I was pretty sure you were not in favour of such bans. Or of banning things in general.
