The way we live now

Library collections continue to promote and proliferate whiteness with their very existence and the fact that they are physically taking up space in our libraries. They are paid for using money that was usually ill-gotten and at the cost of black and brown lives via the prison industrial complex, the spoils of war, etc. Libraries filled with mostly white collections indicates that we don’t care about what POC [people of color] think, we don’t care to hear from POC themselves, we don’t consider POC to be scholars, we don’t think POC are as valuable, knowledgeable, or as important as white people.

Sofia Leung, who describes herself as follows:

I’m (she/her) a librarian, facilitator, and educator working towards fulfilling the promise of social justice in libraries and higher education. I was most recently the Teaching and Learning Program Manager at the MIT Libraries. I’m an editor at the journal, In the Library With The Lead Pipe, and a facilitator for the Association of College and Research Libraries Information Literacy Immersion Program.
I’m currently co-editing a book on Critical Race Theory in Library and Information Studies to be published by the MIT Press. My focus is on building community among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in libraries and beyond.
I hold a Master’s in Library and Information Science and a Master’s in Public Administration, both from the University of Washington in Seattle.

I tweet at @sofiayleung. Check out my CV here.
I’ve seen academia from up close for about eight years, and it’s worse now than it’s ever been. The major thing is just an atmosphere of fear. Scholars are terrified to be honest, terrified that they will say the wrong thing and get destroyed by their colleagues.

Big surprise: Francis' thought for the new year has to do with man and the mundane, rather than with spiritual things aimed at eternal salvation. https://
