Quotations

"Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a Colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them, and will never adopt our Language or Customs, any more than they can acquire our Complexion?"
Benjamin Franklin in 1751

“Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people [slaves] shall be free, nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live under the same government.”
President Thomas Jefferson in a draft of his autobiography, 1821. The first half of the sentence (only) was inscribed on the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC, when it was built at the suggestion of President Franklin Roosevelt.

Most Americans look at the country as if it were an Enron financial statement. Sure, many of the assets are fictitious and the liabilities are understated. But like Merrill Lynch, we are all bullish on America.

“With psychology papers replicating less than 40%, dietary advice reversing after 30 years of fatphobia, macroeconomic analysis working worse than astrology, the appointment of Bernanke who was less than clueless of the risks, and pharmaceutical trials replicating at best only 1/3 of the time, people are perfectly entitled to rely on their own ancestral instinct and listen to their grandmothers.”
