Can and should Nato survive? The future is gloomy for the Middle East and Western Europe - Romania is sheltered by her location

Today Lawrence Wilkerson, Chief of Staff to Colin Powell when he was US Secretary of State, agreed with the judge that the supposed Venezuelan drug smugglers killed by the Americans were murdered. 

Obviously they are right. 

How wrong I was to think Trump a libertarian.

The judge, in January a big supporter of Trump, is now a severe critic.

Surprising to me was that Colonel Wilkerson agrees with Colonel Douglas McGregor that Merz's rearmament is making him the most dangerous German chancellor since Hitler. 

But German rearmament suggests an endless cold war between Germany and Russia which is the last thing Germans should want.

But even this is not as dangerous as Frau Merkel letting in over a million young men without papers from war zones. The men without papers (and many of those with them) are the defence threat, not Russia, China, Iran nor the poor Arabs.

If he pulls us out, I actually think it would be a healthier state than if we stay and let them think we're always behind them like this business he's just talked about with regard to Ukraine and their deployment of guardians into Ukraine, whatever's left of it. I think that's dangerous, extremely dangerous, because we're not going to do what we say we're going to do. We're going to leave them hanging out on the limb they put themselves on. That would be traumatic and I think an end to the relationship as well as an end to the alliance. I think the alliance is going to crumble principally because of Ukraine as a precipitant reason. But the long-term reason is it no longer has a viable purpose for existing and you're going to have major changes over the next 24 months in the political leadership in each one of these countries. And by and large, they're going to be very different, especially in France and in Germany and in Britain.

A month after Russia invaded Ukraine a Cambridge-educated friend of mine took comfort in the thought that the war would rejuvenate Nato and the European Union at a fairly small cost in lives and money. 

My hope was simply that Ukraine would win but ideally without the USA or Nato benefiting.

It has become clearer as the Ukrainian war and Middle Eastern massacres continue that it is the USA that is the big danger to world peace. 

Nato, of course, is (part of) the American empire. 

But it was not the US or Nato but the EU that lit the fuse in Ukraine by its attempt to make a trade deal starting in 2012.

Nato which, with the Australian  and New Zealand defence establishments, is the international deep state, is waiting for Donald Trump to leave office.

By the time he does will Trumpians lead Western Europe?

Nobody can know but things must and will change utterly soon. How nobody knows.
