Dear old Jilly Cooper has died, which saddens me. I was thinking of her the day before she died and almost opened one of her silly, charming novels. She was Rishi Sunak's favourite novelist, but he is now forgotten. Her book on class influenced me and my generation at Cambridge in the 1980s. I read lots of the light soufflés that she wrote, before she produced paperbacks like bricks for secretaries on trains.
Her child told her neighbours' child "Mummy says it is better to say f-ck than to say pardon" and this caused grave offence when repeated to said neighbours.
