'The people who used to run the country and those who thought they had some influence over how it was run are angry, confused and resentful. They feel, to borrow a phrase, left behind.' Stephen Daisley, Remainer

  1. Commentators have often speculated on whom Putin was grooming as his successor. We now have the answer: no one. And this is a wise approach to the issue, because no one in Russia would be capable of filling the shoes of Vladimir Putin, who is a once in a hundred years political phenomenon. And so the shoes to be filled in 2024 and thereafter have been downsized via the power sharing provisions of the proposed constitutional reforms.
    Gilbert Doctorow

“A man’s feet should be planted in his country, but his eyes should survey the world.”

George Santayana, The Life of Reason

“I reckon being ill as one of the great pleasures of life, provided one is not too ill and is not obliged to work till one is better.”

Samuel Butler, The Way of All Flesh

Who is secure in all his basic needs? Who has work, spiritual care, medical care, housing, food, occasional entertainment, free clothing, free burial, free everything? The answer might be “monks and nuns,” but the standard reply is, “prisoners.” And inevitably this conjures up citizens of the Provider State who have protection from the “cradle to the grave.”

Erik Maria Ritter von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, Leftism Revisited (1990)

Positions of authority, power, rank, prestige, wealth, etc., deserve being respected and honored not because they warrant personal excellence but because they stand for a vital necessity of social order and are conducive to the recognition by and in society of the hierarchical distinction of values . . . So far, an ‘aristocratic’ society is both possible and desirable.

  2. I love all of those and agree with them all, except perhaps the first. I think Putin will never retire because he could end up in gaol. At the least, his successor will be able to blackmail him with this threat as he blackmailed Yeltsin into not criticising him. But Putin, objectionable though he is, is a very remarkable man. That is true. In some ways a Russian De Gaulle but he has achieved much more than De Gaulle.
