King Abdullah I of Jordan had been a member of the Turkish parliament and won the parliamentary seat of Mecca in a contested election before the Great War. I wonder if you could get a drink there. He became king of an impoverished scrap of land, lost Mecca and was outraged by the Jewish settlement in Palestine.

How can one not but miss the Ottoman empire?

Is England moving away from our traditional close friendship with the Arabs towards siding with Israel?

I suppose we have to obey American orders.

  1. Given the persistent way that the European powers hurried its decay along from late 17th Century, I'd say that somebody must have figured out how not to miss the Ottoman empire. But remind which American president drew up the Balfour Declaration.
