Giorgia Meloni said on December 23rd, "The year we've had has been tough for all of us. But don't worry, the next one will be much worse."
This was in the Christmas message that the Italian Prime Minister delivers each year to people in her office, usually consisting of bromides.
Last year, for example, she wished everyone a Merry Christmas especially people who 'can’t be with their families' such as police, doctors, nurses and servicemen and women.
She gave no explanation for why 2026 would be much worse than 2025 but I can think of reasons, most to do with the war in Ukraine.
2025 was a very bad year for the world because of migrants and because of the horrors in Gaza.
The latter have been partially paused for now, but we don't know for how long.
We do not know if Trump can bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
It seems very possible that it will continue, as John Mearsheimer thinks, and may wreck the European Union. I hope a deal is being done behind the scenes, as Fred Weir thinks. It will not be one the German government or the European Commission likes.

Georgia Meloni was a sort of Trumpian but was turned when she entered office. She is much closer to her EU colleagues than to him.
I think populists will come to power throughout Europe and, like her, be rendered ineffective.
