The late Queen's 100th birthday today

SHARE

Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas Queen was born one hundred years ago today.

Had the old King died five years sooner she would have been Empress of India.

She lived long enough to entertain Ceausescu and Donald Trump and open innumerable drop-in centres in deprived inner city areas.

Her first PM was Winston Churchill, her last PM was Liz Truss. What a falling off is here.

During her reign the British flourished as never before and were reduced to servitude to the USA and the EU. A country that had colonised so much of the world was now a colony in many senses.

Many things were worse when she died than in 1952 but even more were possibly better.

"Comparisons are odious."

"There is properly no history, only biography." Disraeli
