Hillary Clinton: Europe must curb immigration to stop rightwing populists

SHARE
Hillary Clinton in an interview in The Guardian today.
“I think Europe needs to get a handle on migration because that is what lit the flame. I admire the very generous and compassionate approaches that were taken particularly by leaders like Angela Merkel, but I think it is fair to say Europe has done its part, and must send a very clear message – ‘we are not going to be able to continue provide refuge and support’ – because if we don’t deal with the migration issue it will continue to roil the body politic.”
Historians of the future will tell readers after we are dead why the political elites took so long to understand and accept that electorates do not like mass immigration. After years
reading innumerable articles and reviews of academic books that tried to explain why working class and middle class voters vote for 'populists', finally a sign that penny has partly dropped. Hillary Clinton, who told a secret dinner with Goldman Sachs bosses that she dreams of a borderless Western Hemisphere, still thinks only xenophobes, racists and deplorables dislike immigration. But she is always a pragmatist and now realises that the deplorables' views have to be accepted if progressives like her are to win elections.

Unless left-wing parties come to the conclusion Mrs Clinton has reached they are doomed, but they do not yet know it. Life always teaches you what you need to know, as it has finally taught her, but only if you want to learn.

The signs are that the American left is moving quickly in the opposite direction and walking into Donald Trump's trap.

As Steve Bannon said it in August last year,
“The Democrats, the longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em. I want them to talk about racism every day.”
