Edward Norman said that the Church of England changed enormously between 1603 and 1960 while the Catholic Church in England changed only slightly, but did change. Since then both Churches have changed very much. A lot of the changes were the result of the Second World War. The Communist victory in the war moved the Churches a long way to the left and the shock of learning aboyt the German slaughter of the Jews made people wonder about the importance of  worrying about inadvertently swallowing toothopaste before tking communion.
