Voltaire:

"Every man is a creature of the age in which lives and few are able to raise themselves above the ideas of time."

I constantly try very hard to do this.

Whitney Webb in 2019:

Claims of Epstein’s links and his involvement in a sophisticated, well-funded sexual blackmail operation have, surprisingly, spurred few media outlets to examine the history of intelligence agencies both in the U.S. and abroad conducting similar sexual blackmail operations, many of which also involved underage prostitutes.

"In the U.S. alone, the CIA operated numerous sexual blackmail operations throughout the country, employing prostitutes to target foreign diplomats in what the Washington Post once nicknamed the CIA’s “love traps.” If one goes even farther back into the U.S. historical record it becomes apparent that these tactics and their use against powerful political and influential figures significantly predate the CIA and even its precursor, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). In fact, they were pioneered years earlier by none other than the American Mafia.""

The only Roman slave tag that's been discovered still attached to its collar:

"I have fled, seize me and return me to Zoninus for 1 gold coin."

  1. Supposing that we needed the Mafia to introduce sexual blackmail gives the US a great deal of credit for innocence, but underestimates our native ingenuity. Somebody tried blackmail on Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury. It didn't work, for he had no real constituency outside the president, the cabinet, and the upper levels of Congress, and they really didn't care.
It is always open to the intended victim to say Publish and be damned, in which case the intending blackmailer is left with depreciated goods.

If you wish to read a classic American potboiler of sexual blackmail, look up Alan Drury's Advise and Consent, published about seventy years ago.
