This week, Western Australia Police were provided 200 electronic ankle bracelets with GPS tracking capability, at a cost of $3 million, for monitoring people breaking quarantine. WA Police also received $14.8 million from the state government to purchase 100 additional mobile intelligence cameras, known as automatic number plate recognition cameras (ANPR), to monitor COVID-19 border restrictions. The new tracking devices follow the passage through the WA Parliament this month of the Labor government’s Emergency Management Amendment (COVID-19 Response) Bill 2020.
The bill made several changes to the state’s Emergency Management Act, including the effective removal of a person's right to silence when providing information, giving authorities the power to issue directions to entire 'classes' or groups of people, and attach electronic tracking devices to anyone breaking quarantine.
Strict border controls are in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.
After 11.59pm, on Sunday 5 April 2020 you cannot enter Western Australia unless an exemption has been granted.
From 1.00pm, Sunday 5 April 2020, Western Australians are not permitted to enter Esperance from another local government district without an exemption.
