I had never seen the picture, but would not have required it to make the judgment that yes, the rich do have it better. I spent a fair bit of my twenties more or less out of pocket--not poor even as the US counts poor--but without much spare cash. I did not suffer great inconveniences, but I do find my present modest prosperity preferable.
