The new British Foreign Secretary
David Lammy is now British Foreign Secretary but no cleverer, despite studying at Harvard Law School. When he was on the BBC's quiz programme 'Celebrity Mastermind' he said Marie Antoinette won the Nobel Prize for physics, Henry VII became king when Henry VIII died and Red Leicester is the blue cheese that accompanies port. It is the Henry VII answer that disturbs me most.Previous Foreign Secretaries included Castlereagh, Canning, Salisbury, Curzon .....
Well, yes, but also the Duke of Newcastle. In The Tour of Humphrey Clinker, Smollett depicts him as not knowing that Cape Breton was an island. Historians since seem to regard this as apocryphal but not unfair.
ReplyDeleteI love that book. Newcastle's mistake is pardonable but thinking Henry VII succeeded Henry VIII? Do me a favour!
