Mr Barrett has never publicly stated his views on Brexit so these are not the views of an habitual Eurosceptic; he speaks as a lawyer. We have all heard in the press about the authoritarian tendencies of the last Polish government and the way it packed the courts but these, according to Mr. Barrett, are misrepresentations.
That makes sense. I should have realised before because my golden rule is that (almost) everything Ann Applebaum says is wrong. She is, for me, the princess of darkness.
It is almost impossible to learn the truth about governments that the media class does not like, like Viktor Orban's Hungary or Bolsonaro's Brazil. You can add in Vladimir Putin's Russia and Xi's China I suppose plus Donald Trump in his first administration.
The media is always very hard on people who oppose abortion, which is a lot of the reason why there was so much animus in the British press against Donald Trump during his first term. Young journalists evidently feel strongly about this issue. The media seem to be giving Donald Trump a much easier ride this time, which is to use a cant word counterintuitive.
Just imagine how the European Commission would have reacted had Viktor Orban done what Donald Tusk is doing or if the Romanian court instead of annulling the victory of a Eurosceptic, NATO-sceptic in the 2024 presidential election without, for months, giving any reasons had annulled the election of a passionate Eurofederalist and supporter of Ursula von der Leyen.
