The Iran Contra scandal which led to North going to prison involved the Reagan administration secretly persuading Israel to pass military equipment to Iran. 

Only when the Cold War ended did Israel demonise Iran and use the Iranian threat as a means to win American support and keep the Americans supporting Israel. Israel then started to believe its own propaganda and the consequences have been fateful for the world.
