Trump 2.0’s approach to domestic reform, trade and alliances has been reckless. Trump's tariffs disrupted global markets; his handling of Ukraine and Russia emboldened adversaries; and his treatment of allies left many questioning America’s commitment to global leadership. But in the Middle East he's made some right moves, understanding what Biden seemed to miss: Peace through strength is sometimes the only way. Such is the long-overdue assault on the criminal Houthis.
The Houthis are no more criminals than other actors in the drama, but then grave crimes are being committed by the other parties, including or especially the US.
The Houthi are trying to help their fellow Arabs in Gaza by attacking Israel.
The Houthi attacked only ships with Israeli beneficial owners, according to long time Moscow correspondent John Helmer, until the US and UK decided to hunt down the Houthi in order to protect international shipping on the Suez canal.
It was then that the Houthi targeted US and British ships. Some British ships have been attacked.
The American action had the unintended result of blocking the Suez canal to shipping, the opposite of their stated object.
John Helmer suspects that their main object though was to aid Israel and so do I.
The Houthi are no doubt brutal and objectionable. They execute people for sodomy (as do the Saudis).
In general they seem to have been more sinned against than sinning over the years, as far as I can make out.
The Saudi invasion of Yemen to topple the Houthis and the war crimes the Saudi soldiers committed in their invasion are to blame for the deaths of thousands of Yemenis and shamefully the UK backed the Saudis.
Tulsi Gabbard in 2018 called the Saudi invasion genocidal. Now she supports the US attack on the Houthis.
The English recall that foreign secretary Boris Johnson was emasculated by PM Theresa May after he accused Saudi Arabia of engaging in "proxy wars" in the region.
It's a great game played by the US and UK. The islamists are not a new phenomenon in Asia though they are in Europe. It all started even before the Balfour declaration and reminds me of dear old John Buchan.
I got talking to an intelligent and well informed young Jewish American woman on Christmas Day in a bar in New Orleans. She detested Donald Trump, principally because of his support for Netanyahu.
Her sympathies were entirely with the Arabs. She said there was nothing to be said on the Israeli side. Incidentally, she's the second Jewish American woman I heard say exactly that.
I replied that Trump could not be more Zionist than Biden. It was impossible.
She disagreed.
She was right.
