The Pope is right about politics, for once

ROME — Pope Francis said that NATO “barking” at Russia’s door may have led to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine — and said he has offered to meet the Russian president in Moscow.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francis reflected on Russia’s lethal aggression toward its neighbour and said while he might not go as far as saying NATO’s presence in nearby countries “provoked” Moscow, it “perhaps facilitated” the invasion.

I usually strongly disagree with him when he talks politics. Catholics are free to disagree with the Pope on anything except dogma or what the Church has taught at all times and in all places. Here he is obviously right. It is deeply shocking and a grave threat to democracy that the media do not blame Biden for provoking or facilitating this wicked war. Imagine had it happened under Trump. But of course it would not have happened were Trump in power.

The Pope is intensely anti-American.

He backed Biden who, I think, is likely to pack the Supreme Court to enable abortions to remain legal in Republican ( i.e. religious) states. He backed Hillary in 2016 despite her support for legal abortion and trump's antipathy to it. Both backed and Biden backed very vocally for years single sex marriage.

As far as I know, the only time the Pope condemned single sex marriage was when he was standing next to Vladimir Putin. The Russian leader has orthodox Orthodox views on that subject, though he is an unusually great sinner when it comes to the  commandments not to kill, steal, commit adultery or bear false witness.

  1. Putin is most definitely NOT a religious man....

  2. If NATO wanted Ukraine, Ukraine would have been part of NATO after the first Orange Revolution under George W Bush. But NATO didn't really want Ukraine and dragged its feet on admitting it. Since 2014 Ukraine's NATO eligibility has been further compromised due to Russia's annexation of Crimea. So it's a bit rich to blame Biden for the Russian tanks Putin sent rolling in.
