  1. It should be remembered that Ukraine never did join NATO - but it was certainly left vague as to whether-or-not this was to happen. There was a lot of confusion.

  2. It was about ready to join NATO as Turkey is to join the EU. In other words, not at all.

    1. There was the treaty of the 1990s by which both Britain and the United States did seem (the interpretation of the treaty is disputed) to pledge to uphold the borders of Ukraine - in return for Ukraine giving up nuclear weapons.
