A Conservative MP, naturally. Ruth Dudley Edwards, who has written many satirical novels, told me it is impossible to write satire any more.

An MP failed to alert police after fleeing a car crash dressed in high heels and a “black leather mini-skirt”, a court heard on Monday.

Jamie Wallis told magistrates he felt afraid of being attacked after colliding with a telegraph pole while wearing women’s clothing in November last year.

Wallis, who came out publicly as the first transgender MP in March, was on Monday found guilty of failing to stop and failing to report a road traffic collision, as well as leaving a car in a dangerous position.

The collision, which took place in Llanblethian, South Wales, saw the Mercedes E-Class saloon he was driving hit a telegraph pole with “such force” that it caused an internet blackout for some locals on Church Road.

Wallis claimed he crashed after swerving to avoid hitting a cat and left the scene because he felt vulnerable in women’s clothing due to a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that he developed after being raped two months earlier.
